PRINCIPAL RESEARCHERS

Dr. Wilson Eberle, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Professor

Dr. Wilson Eberle joined the School of Engineering at UBC in July 2008. He is Professor in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Power Electronics.

Presently, Dr. Eberle is the leader of the Energy Systems and Power Electronics Laboratory at UBC. The laboratory has received funding support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the University of British Columbia and the Kaiser Foundation for Higher Education.

Prior to starting at UBC, Dr. Eberle completed his Doctoral degree at Queen’s University under the supervision of Drs. Yan-Fei Liu and P.C. Sen performing research in the area of power electronics. At Queen’s, Dr. Eberle was also a Teaching Fellow for the Electrical and Computer Engineering Project course and a Teaching Assistant in numerous undergraduate courses. Previously, he worked as a Power Supply Design and Test Engineer at Astec Advanced Power Systems in Nepean, Ontario and as and Electrical Engineering Co-op at Ford Motor Company in Windsor, Ontario.

Dr. Eberle is a registered Professional Engineer in the province of British Columbia.
Dr. Liwei Wang, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Associate Professor

Dr. Liwei Wang joined School of Engineering, the University of British Columbia, Kelowna, BC, Canada as an Assistant Professor in July 2014. He is now an Associate Professor.

Dr. Wang established his research lab “Flexible Power Transmission Laboratory for Renewable Energy Integration” in UBC Okanagan Campus. He received Teaching Excellence Award 2017/2018 from the School of Engineering, UBCO.

Dr. Wang received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada, in January 2010. Before he completed his Ph.D., he was an Internship Researcher at ABB Switzerland Corporate Research Center, Baden-Dattwil, Switzerland. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of British Columbia from February 2010 to July 2010. In August 2010, he joined ABB Sweden Corporate Research Center, Västerås, Sweden, as a Scientist and then a Senior Scientist. He served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion (TEC) and IEEE Power Engineering Letters. He was also the Chair of IEEE Task Force on Interfacing Techniques for Simulation Tools from 2019 to 2022.
Through Dr. Liwei Wang, the laboratory received $305,000 CAD funding from Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and BC Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF) in 2017 and NSERC RTI grant of $150,000 CAD in 2021 to acquire the-state-of-the-art lab equipment. The lab equipment and infrastructure include real-time power system/electronics simulators from OPAL-RT, modular multilevel converter test-bench, induction machine drives, measurement and data acquisition systems (TEK oscilloscopes, high voltage, high current probes). He received Teaching Excellence Award 2017/2018 from the School of Engineering, UBCO. His Ph.D. students received  two Best Paper Awards from the 10th IEEE Annual Information Technology, Electronics, and Mobile Communication Conference, (IEEE IEMCON 2019) and the 47th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference (IEEE PVSC47 2020) and one Best Paper Award Finalist from the 2022 IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference (EPEC 2022). His Master and Ph.D. students have received several prestigious scholarships such as NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowships, NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship, NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship – Masters, NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards.
